What is it about?

Wind farms have an impact on near-surface meteorology as turbulent wakes enhance mixing. This study utilizes an instrumented drone to map changes in relative humidity downstream of a wind turbine. Observations show that downstream relative humidity is altered in the vertical, spanwise and downstream directions.

Why is it important?

With agricultural settings largely playing host to most wind turbine arrays, changes to near-surface relative humidity brought about by wind turbines are of interest because of their impact on vegetation, the soil it grows in, and animals. Relative humidity affects the rate of evaporation from each of these.

Perspectives

The associated field campaign also serves as proof of concept for in-situ measurement of other atmospheric parameters, using a drone, with high spatial resolution.
