What is it about?

People living in an island 36 miles long and 16 miles wide can't have many opportunities for local tourism right? Actually this research shows that diverse and extensive domestic tourism is undertaken by residents of a small island within their island. Indeed travelling from one end of the island to the other is quite an unusual and special undertaking.

Why is it important?

We tend to overlook domestic tourism in general and tourism within confined spaces in particular. Yet as this research shows, it is possible to have a day trip or overnight break in an alien environment within close proximity to home.

Perspectives

Whilst conducting research on the Isle of Man as part of a broader project, I was fascinated to observe local residents having days out, camping, caravaning, even owning holiday cottages, a few miles away from where they lived. I then investigated this mico-domestic tourism further and found a varied and vibrant holiday scene self-contained in a small island.
