What is it about?

Discussion is important for learning, however when discussion moves 'online' the 'usual' ways we convey who we are (identities) and how we relate (sense of community) are changed.

Why is it important?

This review proposes that three interconnected aspects of online learning - interaction, sense of community and identity formation - are important for understanding how to improve the learning-teaching experience in higher education.

Perspectives

Lecturers and students often report 'hit and miss' experiences when using online modes of discussion for learning. I hope this review of the literature provides an evidence-based view which enables educators to reflect on current practices to continue to improve the experience of asynchronous discussion for their learners, and also for themselves!
