What is it about?

The adventure of the lion in the Cantar de Mio Cid has been analysed by other scholars and from different perspectives. One of the most complex aspects of this episode is the role which the Cid plays in it, for he is asleep when the lion escapes from its cage. Several studies have sought to explain this curious fact, but none to date has taken into account the time-frame within which this event happens. Yet, it is surely significant that at this time Valencia is a town enjoying a period of respite from war. In this time of peace the town does not need a warrior leader to defend it. The figure of the Cid asleep could be interpreted as a metaphor to convey that his military spirit is at rest, so as to recuperate and prepare for the times of conflict soon to return. Just as, in the Arthurian and other epic cycles, King Arthur and similar epic heroes are renowned for springing back into action when their kingdoms need them again, so will the Cid awaken refreshed and be ready once more to defend his people and his faith.
