We look at the uptake rates of high school band, choir, and orchestra by male and female students in the United States over a 30 year period.

Why is it important?
We find more females than males consistently take music courses, but the precise ratios vary by ensemble. Choir tends to have a 70:30 female to male ratio, while the instrumental ensembles are much closer to 50:50, though females still predominate.
