What is it about?

This paper explores some of the challenges faced by academic staff undertaking teaching overseas in the context of the internationalisation of higher education. We use real examples to suggest some underpinning principles and guidance for maintaining integrity and respect when working in diverse cultural settings.

Why is it important?

The rapid internationalisation of higher education has led to vast numbers of students and staff moving around the globe. As part of this internationalisation, increasing numbers of academic staff undertake teaching outside their normal context. This raises a range of cultural challenges and our paper provides an argument for better academic development and preparation to support staff in these challenging roles.
