What is it about?

This paper provides details of an academic staff development project to support staff in an Iraqi university to implement student centred learning. It provides the evaluation data from this British Council funded project, and then uses these findings and experiences to raise a key question about whether student centred learning is a Western imposition.

Why is it important?

Student centred learning is a key concept in higher education. This paper asks if it is a concept that is Western and therefore irrelevant or unsuitable to other non-Western universities. The question is discussed in relation to a real example of implementing student centred learning in Iraq. This has great significance within the internationalisation of higher education.
