What is it about?

This is the introduction to a special issue on debates about (the legalization of) same-sex marriage in the Netherlands, Sweden and the United States. The contributions aim to show that these debates were not only about marriage rights, but also about marriage rites. Moreover, these contributions show the multiple functions and meanings of "religion" in these debates.

Why is it important?

Debates about same-sex marriage and/or homosexuality teach us much about the role of religion in (post)secular liberal societies.

Perspectives

I think that the focus, both in popular and in academic discourses, on same-sex marriage rights to rites and symbolics not only helps to see the multiple meanings and functions of religion and homosexuality, but also helps to find ways out of possible impasses.
