The relationship between interpreting and ideology in the European Parliament

What is it about?

This article compares the German and English versions of the same debates in the European Parliament to try to look at what happens to ideology when debates are simultaneously interpreted. I look at word choice, reference to other texts and historical events, and the use of sustained metaphor to investigate how the ideology of the EU is conveyed, i.e. whether it is weakened, strengthened or changed in some way through the interpretation.
