What is it about?

In this work we propose a mathematical model to describe respiration and ethylene production rates of avocado and feijoa fruits and its application in modified atmosphere packaging.

Why is it important?

This model can be a useful tool to predict the evolution of gas levels in the packaging system and to define equilibrium concentrations of O2, CO2 or ethylene favorable to the produce preservation.

Perspectives

This work is part of a project where we want to describe how the quality properties of a a fresh produce packed in MAP, are influenced by the changing levels of gases within the packaging system and the storage temperature. The aim is to develop an integrated mathematical model which can simulate all these are changes simultaneously.
