A paper on how ancient idea of liberty was adapted in the early modern period by the early-modern Polish gentry (without fitting the political model of their state properly).

Why is it important?

Some concepts are considered to always mean the same thing, but as scholarship in the history of ideas demonstrates, their meaning depends on the social, political, and historical context. It is important to trace such changes with reference to the ideas crucial to people's identities, such as freedom. This paper does this for the idea of freedom in the early modern period, different in a constitutional monarchy from what it meant in Athenian democracy or Roman republic.
