What is it about?

We explore laypeople’s preferences for newly emerging climate engineering technology (CE). It turns out that laypeople are more likely to accept climate engineering techniques like cloud whitening because they mentally represent climate engineering techniques as a back-up strategy.

Why is it important?

This result is important considering the high prevalence of the plan B framing in climate engineering appraisal studies and its implications for public opinion-formation processes.

Perspectives

Mitigation to climate change comes to an end if we would rely completely on CE techniques.
