What is it about?

This work contributes to the practical understanding of the ISO standard for cushions in wheelchairs. It intends to become a tool for manufacturers (Design specs, performance, etc), a guide for clinicians (so they can quantify their educated prescription), and a way for the end users to reconnect with the product designers.

Why is it important?

It brings clarity to some unclear concepts and relationships described in the ISO document through the use of an engineering systematic approach to characterisation and testing

Perspectives

This work explores the meaning of the ISO 16840-2 Standard for the characterisation of cushions and supportive pads used in wheelchairs. From an engineering viewpoint it explains how cushions behave and therefore can be used as a tool for the clinicians who need guidance in the prescription of seating support for their patients
