What is it about?

Polycentric development is a key concept of EU spatial development strategies. However, its impact on diminishing regional disparities has not yet been proofed. Based on the analysis measuring the impact of polycentric urban systems on intra-regional disparities the study is rather sceptical about the unique role of polycentricity in spatial development.

Why is it important?

The unique position of polycentricity in EU spatial development strategies is not supported by empirical findings. Moreover, the most of studies reflect only national level or international comparison of urban systems. This study is focused on missing proof about ability of polycentricity to overcome regional disparities. Micro-regional approach allows to reveal intensive inter-urban interactions and structure of everyday human activities that are crucial in local development. Thus, the study contributes to discussion about potential of micro-regions to generate polycentric urban systems and suggests that the role of polycentricity in spatial development should not be overestimated.
