What is it about?

In this study, I set out to investigate if the nature of the study materials had an effect on how students studied, and on how well they learnt the vocabulary. The materials focused on a selection from the Academic Word List (Coxhead) which was appropriate for the population concerned. Different subgroups of student were given different types of materials (ranging from bi-lingual lists to more detailed explanations/definitions of words combined with examples), and studied independently during a five-week period, sending in logpages. Their knowledge of the vocabulary was tested before study, immediately after study and after a 5-week delay. Some materials turned out to yield better results; time spent studying did not appear to have a significant effect.
