What is it about?

Hans Nielsen Hauge was a revivalist around 1800 in Norway, travelling all over the country and publishing books as the first peasant son in Norway. His revival improved the skills of reading and writing among Norwegian peasants and released even female authors. This aspect of his ministry is seldom discussed.

Religious reading and writing is a part of the Norwegian history which is crucial to understand the democratic development after 1814. This article will add to the understanding of this issue and place the Haugean revival into the development of the Norwegian society at large at that crucial time.
