What is it about?

The article presents the educational ideas and practices of the Orange-Nassau family in the Dutch Republic, based on the examples of the future Stadtholders Frederik Hendrik, Willem II, William III, Hendrik Casimir II, Johan Willem Friso. Main sources for this research project were letters sent by the Princes of Orange and Counts of Nassau to their children.

Why is it important?

This is the first comprehensive study on the education of the future Dutch Stadtholders, which encompasses a period of over 100 years. It demonstrates how the different future tasks of the children influenced the choice of the tutors and the study subjects. It also shows the relationship between the parents and the children and the educational staff.
