What is it about?

We look at 10 different ways to formatively assess engineering mathematics during lectures or tutorials, giving examples from research literature of best practices, and highlighting some practical notes for implementing these approaches.

Why is it important?

Formative assessment (or assessment for learning) allows both lecturers and students to obtain feedback about how the student is doing while there is still time to improve. However, introducing effective methods for doing this in a lecture setting can be challenging, so this paper brings together some of the best approaches for doing this for engineering mathematics.

Perspectives

This was a really enjoyable paper to write, as myself and my colleague drew on our own experiences and those of others to put this together. I hope you find some useful tips in here that help you to increase the effectiveness of the formative assessment you use!
