What is it about?

The development of emotional and cognitive abilities in young children have only recently begun to be examined in conjunction with one another. The current study assessed two aspects of emotional ability in preschool children and examined how one's ability to curb impulsive behavior and sustain attention was associated with emotional development.

Why is it important?

Gaining a better understanding of how these emotional and cognitive skills unfold developmentally can provide researchers, practitioners, and parents with insight as to how to target and promote social-emotional competence and self-regulatory behavior in children. Moreover, this study lends credence to the notion that it may be that cognitive and emotional abilities develop concurrently rather than in an asynchronous fashion.
