What is it about?

The article analyses the shortcomings of the to purely politicaly-economic approach to the monetization of user generated content. It introduces the notion of the dispositive of social media, and delineates its main features. Analyzing social media along these features, it shows how the value is created in social media not (only) in strictly financial terms, but by making users ever more responsible for their individual existence, thus transforming the society itself.

Why is it important?

The article provides a more precise description of the notion of dispositive, and of my conception of the social media dispositive. It explains the relevance of the work of Foucault and Althusser for the understanding of the role of media in contemporary capitalism, and delineates the main directions of contemporary societies' transformations.
