Why is it important?

A technique has been developed to segregate the Neptunium (Np) along with other actinides from high level radioactive waste using selective reagents arising from PUREX processing of thermal reactor fuels.

Perspectives

Np is a highly radioactive element generated fromfrom Purex processing of thermal reactor fuels. The extraction of Np from high active aqueous raffinate waste (HAW) as well as high-level waste (HLW) solutions arising from Purex processing of thermal reactor fuels has been developed.
