What is it about?

This manuscript describes the geology and geochemistry of Carnley Volcano in the Auckland Islands on the Campbell Plateau to the south of New Zealand.

Why is it important?

It gives a model for the formation of magmas in a continental tectonic setting, far away from plate boundaries such as oceanic ridges and subduction zones.

Perspectives

Intraplate volcanism is commonly related to mantle plumes, but in some cases it is a function of plate movement and thermo-mechanical relations between asthenospheric and lithospheric mantle.
