What is it about?

In this article, Montgomery and I suggest that there is a continuum from parental involvement with schools through to parental engagement with learning and it is this last idea which will do the most to support learning.

Why is it important?

This paper is important because it crystalises a great deal that has gone before in the research literature and makes the difference between involvement with schools, and engagement with learning, clear and easy to understand.

Perspectives

I'd been using the slides that led to this article for some time before we realised how important it was to share these ideas with a wider audience, and to add to the research around parental engagement. The term is too often confused with parental involvement, but the two are not the same thing.
