Why is it important?

This article adds to the literature on the role of public libraries as custodians of archival materials and the challenges they face in providing archival services which differ significant from the usual range of public library services.

Perspectives

This article was written to highlight the usually unsung role of public libraries in preserving local archives in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is part of a larger project to document the non-government archives in Australia, a country where government archives are regulated and supported, but there is little coordination or support for archives outside the government sphere.
