What is it about?

When blending online learning systems in an educational curriculum, the online portion goes through a process called (technology) normalization. When the system is absorbed into everyday practice, it is considered normalized. With respect to vocabulary learning systems in second languages, however, we found several factors necessary for a valid normalization process to occur: transparency, constructive alignment, and coordinator’s and teacher’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Without these factors, there can be resistance to normalization, or even a false sense of normalization.

Why is it important?

This is extremely important because teachers and administrators depend on the analytics offered on teacher or administrator-level dashboards of such online systems, and if these analytics are not clear, or not in alignment with program objectives, then it is not possible to provide validation, or assurance of the educational quality of the curriculum and its systems. So we recommend that educational companies and universities work together to design better systems.

Perspectives

With technology advanced so quickly, teachers are spending more time than ever in absorbing and adapting technology to improve learning programs. It can be difficult, especially for smaller schools and programs to take time to validate learning systems carefully, so we hope that this article will benefit other language school administrators who coordinate vocabulary learning systems for their students.
