What is it about?

I have been teaching translation for nine years, and literary translation for eight. I wrote this article because I had many difficulties explaining to students why some renderings are better than others AND making my arguments convincing. The difficulties double because I teach translation from Chinese INTO English, English being a language I had no exposure to until I was 13.

Why is it important?

This is an attempt to enhance students' confidence in their instructor and in themselves when translating into a non-native language.

Perspectives

Style has been persistently invoked as a top priority in literary translation, but it is seldom examined in systematic detail or dissected into operable parts. I propose that a set of tools can be defined, taught and explored through the discipline of stylistics to assist in the accomplishment of the style imperative.
