What is it about?

This article is about the impact Airbnb and other short-term rental platforms have on cities and its residents. It explains how different cities have been regulating Airbnb in different ways and why. This is done by comparing various policies document from cities within Europe and the United States that are dealing with regulating short-term rentals. The second part of this paper takes a closer look at the process of drafting regulations and the difficulties that come along with implementing and enforcing them. This is done by conducting interviews with multiple stakeholders in the city of Denver, a city that is considered one of the most successful when it comes to drafting an ordinance related to short-term rentals.

Why is it important?

As the presence of Airbnb and other short-term rental platforms in cities has grown quickly and tremendously, may cities do not know how to react to it. This paper gives insights in how other cities have been dealing with the issue of regulating short-term rentals and why. Up to date not much has been written about this in academic literature. It therefore serves as a basis for further research on this topic as well as it provides some guidelines for other cities that are trying to regulate Airbnb and other short-term rental platforms.

Perspectives

Airbnb is currently used a scapegoat for many problems in cities. It has to be noted however that there are different 'types' of Airbnb apartments: commercial and individual. The former is in my opinion why we need strict regulations in some cities. The latter, which was also the initial idea of the Airbnb founders, is still what can add great value to touristic experiences and staying with locals is actually what I enjoy doing myself as well while travelling.
