Career aspirations of further education students
What is it about?
This article reports on an ethnographic study of the career aspirations of 34 students at a Further Education (tertiary education) college, who were enrolled on sports courses. Using Bourdieu's theoretical perspectives, we draw on ethnographic observations, and semi-structured group interviews, to examine in-depth the contrasting occupational perspectives emergent within two groups of mainly working-class students. The study offers salient insights into students' career aspirations and the ways in which certain educational practices contribute to the production and reproduction of class inequalities.
