What is it about?

The paper estimates a number of measures of competition for the UK banking sector over a 24 year period to see how competition has changed over the period. We also investigate whether competition has had different effects on different types of firms over this period.

Why is it important?

Our findings allow us to look at how competition responded to the significant changes in regulation, technology and industry structure over the longer term. We find that, following a period of strong competition at the start of our estimation period, the strength of competition diminished ahead of the financial crisis and did not change in the subsequent period
