What is it about?

The study revealed characteristics variations in the backscatter coefficient with respect to time and polarization for age in VH polarization than in VV and ratio of VV/VH polarization showing discrimination of young orchard particularly in VV polarization.

Why is it important?

Important to assess the potential of Sentinel-1A SAR data for the time-series analysis of orchard crop system and establish the orchard biophysical parameters relationship with SAR backscatters.

Perspectives

This study revealed the high potential of Sentinel-1A SAR data in the characterization of the orchard. It is clearly shown that VH polarized signals have a greater sensitivity to orchard parameters and that remotely sensed Sentinel-1A radar data can be used for the inverse backscatter modelling. Thus, the study has given a new direction to characterize crop particularly orchard and fruit trees in better understanding the growth throughout the season over its life cycle.
