What is it about?
Why is it that certain plays are translated and others not? Why is it that certain plays are performed on stage and others not? Can it be that these two questions are linked? This article considers these issues by exploring two notions that are prevalent in translation studies (translatability) and in performance studies (performability).

Why is it important?
It is important because there is an increasing amount of research that looks at theatre translation. To date, little has been done to advance the theory of theatre translation. This is the remit of this article.
Perspectives
For those with experience working in theatre translation, having some theoretical notions to explain processes is necessary.
