The meaning of student engagement and disengagement

What is it about?

Despite the popularity of student engagement and disengagement, the academic literature is unclear about the meaning of these terms. In this paper, I provide clear explanations of student engagement and disengagement by drawing upon organizational behaviour theory.

Why is it important?

In my review, I show that student engagement and disengagement can be defined by students' activation and pleasure. I then offer suggestions for measuring student engagement and disengagement.

This research is crucial for shifting student engagement and disengagement research from meaning everything related to affect, behaviour, and cognition to concepts that have clear conceptual boundaries.
