Learn to write a good introduction to get a good grade

What is it about?

University students were taught how to write an inroductory paragraph for an academic essay following recommended organisational techniques. The 2-hour workshop was effective in improving the quality of introductions. For students who handed in a later essay marked by their course tutors, the quality of the introduction was a good predictor of the grade their essay got.

Why is it important?

This study shows that students can be taught to write introductions to their university essays and that using the recommended organisational patterns helps them get better grades from their course tutors or markers.
