What is it about?

This review examines the shape of a "state of the field" examination of the literature on slavery in the United States. It draws on the work of several authors, all of whom were inspired by historian Peter Kolchin, and examines several interlocking themes in the literature: most notably, the relationship between slavery and capitalism; the development of enslaved peoples' communities; and the virtue of comparative history.
