What is it about?

In this piece, the authors use the popular food, pizza, to develop lesson plan ideas that secondary level teachers could use in teaching US history. The story of pizza is fascinating, when explored from a global or local perspective, and the piece could serve as a model for similar investigations of other foods--popular or otherwise.

Why is it important?

Food is necessary for life, but not all food is as popular as pizza. Teaching topics like the history of pizza is both motivating for adolescents and informative about the everyday nature of the past and the hidden history of local sites such as pizza parlors.

Perspectives

A lot of folks are foodies these days. Knowing something about where favorite foods such as pizza come from can be fun from both a culinary and a teaching perspective.
