What is it about?
Blends of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) / methyl-vinyl silicone rubber (MVQ) filled with dough moulding compound (DMC) were prepared and the effects of various amounts of the SBR on the mechanical properties and the oxygen index of the DMC filled MVQ blends were investigated. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and infrared spectrum analysis (IR) of the DMC/SBR/MVQ blends were investigated.

Why is it important?
The shortage of electricity, coal, oil, gas, wind and solar energy has aroused people's attention and energy shortage has become a global problem; under such background the use of power to generate electricity has become one of the important ways to solve this problem. The development of the power results in the need for development of cable materials for distributing the electricity produced by the power; actively researching and developing cable materials for the power plants are of great significance for the use of the energy. As a material for the power, solar and wind electricity cables, silicone rubber is a type of cable insulating material with high quality. The thermal degradation resistance of silicone rubber is the best of all kinds of rubbers; silicone rubber also has excellent weather resistance, aging resistance and good electrical insulating properties, which make it irreplaceable by other materials. However, the mechanical properties of silicone rubber are poor. In this work, dough moulding compound (DMC), a uniform mixture made mainly of glass fibres, was adopted in this work to reinforce methyl vinyl silicone rubber (MVQ) with styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) added to improve the compatibility between the DMC and MVQ; the influence of their relative amounts on the properties of the DMC filled SBR / MVQ blends were investigated.
Perspectives
I and my students, after long-term research, found that can be used to deal with the glass fiber modified silicone rubber, styrene butadiene rubber as a compatibilizer , which can make the silicone rubber for cable and space cable materials, widening the application range of silicone rubber, it is a meaningful work.
