What is it about?

The article presents the vowel charts of the Northwest area of mainland Portugal and discusses the data on the basis of previous data from other areas of the linguistic territoire. It provides a proposal concerning the number of phonological systems adequate to explain the acoustic data presented.

Why is it important?

It is the first study addressing this issue on the basis of the dialectal data of the Atlas (ALEPG).

Perspectives

This paper discusses the underlying nature of phonetic vowels in European Portuguese. Data from a dialect variation corpus were acoustically described (ALEPG) in what concerns the northwestern area of Portugal. It also deals with data from previous work on acoustic vowel variation in European Portuguese.
