What is it about?

Second Language Pronunciation as a field will grow only when a professional infrastructure is in place, including professional books, dedicated conferences, and a visible professional journal. This paper describes the development of the field and ideas for the professional infrastructure that will assist its future growth.

Why is it important?

New fields, such as Second Language Pronunciation, can grow when certain things are in place that allow researchers to claim the field as a professional interest. Drawing a parallel with the field of Second Language Writing, this paper explores the history of and the potential future for the field.

Perspectives

This journal is the result of many years of planning and building other elements of a professional infrastructure for the field of second language pronunciation. The paper offers my (the editor's) take on why the journal is so important for the future.
