What is it about?

This article examines how pervasive heteronormative discourses are in commonly available ESL reading texts and textbooks. It also explores changes over time in a medium-sized sample of some 45 texts and textbooks.

Why is it important?

It's important because it highlights just how endemic an issue the lack of sexual/gender diversity is in ESL reading texts. It also shows these curricular materials may have a reinforcing effect in contexts where heteronormative or homophobic discourses are already dominant​.
