What is it about?

The volume contains both phonetic-phonological and syntax studies on language variation in Portuguese (mainly European and Brazilian varieties). The book is organized in two parts: 1. Variation within national varieties of Portuguese and 2. Variation across national varieties if Portuguese.

Why is it important?

This is the first volume to address both European and Brazilian varieties of Portuguese. The chapters by linguists from different linguistic areas and theoreetical frameworks provide a wide coverage of the main issues of Portuguese varition phenomena within and accross language varieties.

Perspectives

I hope that this book provides good reasons for new researchers to come into the field of language variation studies and, more specifically, into Portuguese variation. Portuguese is a pluricentric language which is still lacking many sociolinguistic studies in several language varieties.
