Deletion of final /t/ or /d/ in Asian Englishes

What is it about?

This article examines the deletion of the final /t/ or /d/ in three Asian Englishes: Hong Kong English, China English, and Vietnam English. Final /t, d/ deletion - the omission of the final sound in words such as 'just' and 'hand' - is a widely studied and well-known sociolinguistic phenomenon in a number of Englishes, including American English. The current study examines the extent to which the factors found to influence /t, d/ deletion in American English and other varieties of English, are similar to those found for Asian Englishes, in order to determine whether the factors influencing /t, d/ deletion in Asian Englishes are universal across all Englishes or variety-specific.
