An OT Approach to dialect code-switching

What is it about?

Multilingual people naturally switch between languages. Monolingual people also naturally switch between different levels of dialect (like from formal to informal, from intimate to less intimate). This paper applies a new model for understanding these types of switches among multilingual people to data collected from monolingual people.

Why is it important?

This paper is important because 1) it considers data previously analyzed in another model and considers whether a different model might better account for the switches, 2) it includes a different type of data than the model originally considered, thus making the model more robust, and 3) it highlights the similarities between multilingual and monolingual code-switching.
