What is it about?

Every nation has its own culture. Folk poetry portrays the history of this culture. When translating such works, the history of nations must be taken into account. This task always gives the possibility of a manipulation. The article examines different translation strategies.

Why is it important?

Recent wars in the Balkans have updated the history of Balkan nations. After living together in a common state, with a common history, there is now a need for separate histories of nations that justify them historically and culturally, with their own traditions.

Perspectives

The article aims to point out the devastating effects which politically motivated interpretations of cultural-historical and traditional folk texts can have. Above all, it is intended to point out false contexts that arise from a historical ignorance.
