What is it about?

Short-term stress can help the skin defend against germs by moving immune cells to the surface. Pigment cells in the skin play an important role by guiding these cells to the right places. This process helps prepare the skin to respond quickly to potential infections when the body is under stress.

Why is it important?

Stress is usually thought to weaken the immune system, but our study shows that short-term stress can actually stimulate immunity at the skin. Understanding this surprising effect helps us rethink how the body responds to stress. This knowledge could guide future research on reducing the harmful effects of stress or developing new treatments that safely boost the immune system.

Perspectives

This work not only highlights an overlooked aspect of stress biology but also showcases the unique power of zebrafish for studying dynamic immune processes in vivo. In this project we have uncovered a novel, immune-stimulating effect of short-term stress, an area that has received surprisingly little attention. We were able to take full advantage of the zebrafish embryo model, which allowed us to directly visualize immune cells moving in real time, which is nearly impossible in most other vertebrate models. Interestingly, the localization of immune cells at the skin is something many researchers working with zebrafish have likely seen before, but no one had ever connected it to a stress response.
