What is it about?
The authors used different methods to investigate the DNA base excision repair pathway, one of the major DNA repair pathways in mammalian cells. This pathway fixes damaged single-base lesions which occur at a frequency of more than 20,000 per cell per day.

Why is it important?
The DNA base excision repair pathway was revised based on the experimental evidence in the paper. For the first time, the paper established the chemical mechanism for dRP lyase, a critical enzymatic function to the base excision repair pathway.
