What is it about?

This paper investigates the nature and internal fabric of resistant gravels in an Oxisol of the Brazilian savanna region.

Why is it important?

In this paper, we demonstrate that different gravel types occur in highly weathered soils, although they are generically named "laterites" and assumed to be homogeneus. Further, these gravels record different cycles of soil formation, as noted by the different composition and allocation of Fe/Al oxides within coarse particles.

Perspectives

More than providing information about lateritic nodules, we believe this paper innovates in offering a novel approach to the gravel fraction, which is not considered soil per se, but in fact are better records of pedogenic conditions than sand, silt and clay fractions.
