What is it about?

The classic Bödewadt boundary layer is a prototype for boundary layers beneath vortices. This paper attempts to quantify turbulent Bödewadt boundary-layer flow using a simple turbulence model based on Prandtl's mixing-length theory. Prandtl's model is very simple; in fact, it is too simple. Using this model, the flow structure within the boundary layer is unphysical close to the axis of symmetry.

Why is it important?

Our understanding of - and ability to accurately quantify - the velocity within a boundary layer beneath an atmospheric vortex is currently very poor, and numerical models cannot accurately simulate these small-scale motions . It is important to develop and employ accurate models of rotating turbulent boundary layers.
