What is it about?

In a broad sense, this work is a contribution to the detailed understanding of the fundamentals of diffusion-controlled rates. Barrier crossing in the presence of environmental fluctuations is an elemental mechanism in many natural and designed processes, ranging from chemical reactions, transport in small systems, logic operations in computers, to climate science. During the transition over the barrier and settlement to the next stable state, the system passes through a continuum of nonequilibrium states. The study develops a thorough understanding of the effect of the characteristics of these states on the rates related to diffusion-controlled transport. The specific roles of the originating and the target state on the rate of transfer have been revealed.
