What is it about?

We investigate the hydrogen impurity in solar cell materials CIGS and CZTS, relevant for very thin photovoltaic devices. Since hydrogen is very difficult to investigate directly, we use implanted positive muons to mimick its behaviour, together with theoretical modelling.

Why is it important?

Our new results allow us to have detailed information about the final stage of the implantation process, which is important to understand in these experiments and which is also material dependent (bringing information about the material itself). At the same time, we obtain for the first time (using the muon analogue) the configurations of hydrogen in CZTS.

Perspectives

In usual physics experiments you always have to perturb the system somehow, but the price to pay is that the experimental results are always a mix of your perturbation and the reaction of the system. Here we help pushing the field of hydrogen in semiconductors by both contributing to the understanding of the perturbation (the implanted muon) and of the system (the solar cell materials CIGS and CZTS).
