What is it about?

Chalcones and its derivate have been known to have many interesting activities. We synthesized 1-(4’-bromophenyl)-3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-propene-1-on or BHM. The compound showed cytotoxic activity on HeLa cervical cancer cell line, induced apoptosis, and suppressed the expression of Bcl-2 protein.

Why is it important?

Cervical cancer is the most common type of cancer suffered by Indonesian women. The existing cancer therapies (surgery, radiation, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy) have not been optimal in overcoming many cancer cases. Thus, research to find new anticancer compounds is urgently needed.

Perspectives

I hope the article can contribute ideas to develop cancer drugs from chalcone derivatives. Hopefully, the results of this study can further provide implications that BHM can be developed as a potential drug for the treatment of cervical cancer.
